Experts have pointed out that these proposed zones may overlap with areas claimed by Taiwan.
Officials from Taiwan have indicated that both Japan and the Philippines have provided assurances that any resultant agreement will not be legally binding on third parties and will adhere to established international legal principles. Taiwan’s government has committed to continued engagement with both nations to protect its maritime rights, including access to fishing resources and other regional interests. They emphasized that existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines remain in force.
This development occurs amid heightened regional tensions following China’s claims over waters east of Taiwan, accompanied by coast guard patrols in the area. Taiwan has dismissed these claims, reiterating its position on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
Philippine authorities have clarified that formal negotiations have yet to commence and cautioned against speculating on how any future agreement might affect fishing rights or territorial claims.
