Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be present at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Poland, a decision that underscores escalating tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw. This friction arises from a contentious historical issue involving a Ukrainian military unit. The conference’s objective is to rally international support and financial backing for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts. Instead of President Zelenskyy, Ukraine will be represented by a delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko at the event taking place in Gdańsk, Poland.
The discord between the two nations was ignited after Zelenskyy sanctioned the naming of a Ukrainian military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While many Ukrainians view the UPA as a symbol of the nation’s fight for independence, in Poland, the group is associated with the tragic loss of Polish lives during the Second World War. This decision has drawn criticism from Polish officials, notably President Karol Nawrocki, who accused Ukraine of disregarding historical grievances. Despite previously strong ties due to their united front against Russia’s invasion, this disagreement has strained the relationship between Ukraine and Poland.
In defense of the decision, Zelenskyy argued that it is within the rights of military units to choose names that resonate with Ukrainian historical narratives. He also cautioned that such political disagreements could potentially undermine the cooperative relationship between Ukraine and Poland, especially as both countries face ongoing security threats.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for calm, advising both parties to de-escalate the situation, emphasizing that disagreements should not harm the strategic alliance between the two nations. Meanwhile, European officials have expressed concern that a deterioration in Ukraine-Poland relations could be advantageous for Russia, urging the neighboring allies to maintain their cooperative stance.
