SIT Appoints Heng Swee Keat as First Chancellor to Lead Innovation

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) has made a significant appointment by naming former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat as its inaugural chancellor, with his term set to commence on June 1, 2026. Heng’s appointment will last for five years, concluding on May 31, 2031, and he will hold the university’s highest ceremonial position, serving as a key ambassador.

In his new role, Heng will oversee major university events such as graduation ceremonies and represent SIT at important institutional and external engagements. The institute emphasized that Heng’s extensive leadership experience and professional connections are expected to enhance partnerships and support strategic objectives, including collaborations with industries and philanthropic efforts.

The establishment of the chancellor position signals SIT’s ongoing evolution as a higher education institution committed to producing graduates equipped for the industry through applied learning, research, and close ties with business and industry partners. Heng expressed his enthusiasm for the role, highlighting the crucial role of applied research and strong industry partnerships in contemporary education and his eagerness to work with the university community to further its mission.

Education Minister Desmond Lee extended his congratulations to Heng on his appointment, expressing confidence in Heng’s ability to steer SIT’s future growth and contribute significantly to the higher education sector in Singapore. Heng’s background includes serving as chairman of the National Research Foundation, a director at GIC, and a member of its Investment Strategies Committee. His previous roles include Deputy Prime Minister from 2019 to 2025, Education Minister from 2011 to 2015, and Finance Minister from 2015 to 2021.
