The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the recent launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), named Valour. This event, held at Benoi Shipyard, comes just nine months after the launch of the fleet’s first ship, Victory, highlighting the accelerated progress in the program. ST Engineering CEO Vincent Chong noted that the construction of Valour benefited from insights gained during the Victory project, allowing the ship to be launched three months ahead of schedule. This efficiency is expected to continue improving with the subsequent vessels.
Designed to succeed the aging Victory-class missile corvettes, the new MRCVs are equipped to handle a diverse array of missions through their integration with various unmanned systems. The fleet, which will include ships named Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance alongside Victory and Valour, is slated for delivery starting from 2028. At the launch ceremony, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam underlined the strategic importance of maritime security amidst rising global tensions and disruptions, particularly in vital sea lanes like the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that these vessels will safeguard Singapore’s maritime interests with extended range and endurance capabilities.
Construction is already underway for the third and fourth vessels in this class. Minister Shanmugam emphasized Singapore’s capability to design, build, and maintain advanced naval warships within the country, attributing this proficiency to decades of investment in the national defense industry. The development of these vessels involved complex systems integration tasks, including the management of power, cooling, and mission module requirements, as highlighted by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned 19-year veteran of the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, has been appointed as the commanding officer of Valour. He expressed his ambition to cultivate a crew imbued with a pioneering spirit, aiming to contribute to the evolving future of the Republic of Singapore Navy. The introduction of these vessels marks a significant leap in Singapore’s maritime defense capabilities, ensuring readiness to face the challenges posed by the evolving security landscape.
