Both Wong and Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão were present to witness the signing, which sets the stage for regular consultations between their countries’ foreign ministries on a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues.
Economically, Singapore has underlined its role as one of the largest investors in Timor-Leste, with ongoing explorations into opportunities in renewable energy and wholesale trade. Highlighting workforce development, Prime Minister Wong announced a new initiative slated for 2027, which will allow Timorese workers to seek employment in selected sectors in Singapore, such as construction and marine shipyards. This initiative is expected to bolster workforce opportunities and further strengthen the ties between the people of both nations.
The cooperation framework also extends into healthcare and education, with plans for Singapore’s National University Hospital to collaborate with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health. This partnership will focus on workforce development and training in healthcare. In education, Singapore has committed to assisting Timor-Leste in developing leadership training programs for educators, further enriching the educational landscape of the country.
Singapore’s support for Timor-Leste’s integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) remains steadfast. The city-state has pledged to expand training programs and assist Timor-Leste as it prepares for its future ASEAN chairmanship in 2029. This effort underscores Singapore’s commitment to facilitating Timor-Leste’s engagement with regional affairs and strengthening its international presence.
In a gesture of appreciation for Singapore’s enduring support, President José Ramos-Horta honored Prime Minister Wong with the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar). This accolade acknowledges Singapore’s significant contributions to Timor-Leste’s development journey and its path toward ASEAN membership.
