At the Young PAP’s 40th anniversary event, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made a call for greater youth participation within the People’s Action Party (PAP), emphasizing the need for diverse viewpoints and ideas. Wong highlighted that such diversity is crucial for the party’s continuous renewal and its ability to tackle future challenges facing Singapore. He invited citizens, including those who may not always agree with the PAP, to engage in discussions and contribute their ideas for the nation’s progress.
Addressing perceptions among some young Singaporeans that the PAP might seem like a well-established entity with no need for new participants, Wong countered this by describing Singapore as a “global underdog.” He stressed the importance of each generation bringing new leadership and innovative approaches to the table, underscoring the ongoing necessity for fresh perspectives within the party.
The Prime Minister also cautioned against politics that are divisive or confrontational. He asserted that the PAP advocates for problem-solving through collaboration, practical measures, and building consensus, rather than inciting public discontent or fostering political divides. This approach, he suggested, is essential for maintaining unity and effectively addressing the nation’s issues.
Coinciding with the anniversary celebration, the event saw the launch of the Young PAP Academy. This initiative aims to provide leadership training and mentorship opportunities to youth activists, equipping them with the skills needed to make a positive impact. Additionally, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering S$5,000 grants to support community projects led by young party members, thereby encouraging active community involvement and leadership development among the youth.
