Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make history as the first Singaporean prime minister to visit Timor-Leste on an official trip scheduled for July 2 to 3. During his visit, Wong will engage in high-level discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. A significant highlight of his visit will be receiving the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the nation’s highest accolade, acknowledging Singapore’s contributions to Timor-Leste’s development and its integration into the ASEAN community.
The visit will focus on enhancing bilateral relations with the signing of a memorandum of understanding and establishing a framework for regular consultations. These efforts aim to bolster cooperation in key areas such as governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. The collaboration between Singapore and Timor-Leste has been longstanding, with Singapore providing training programmes, technical assistance, and peacekeeping support since the early days of Timor-Leste’s independence. This partnership has only deepened following Timor-Leste’s entry into ASEAN.
Further strengthening diplomatic ties, PM Wong will participate in a state banquet and engage with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. His visit underscores Singapore’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into regional institutions and fostering closer relations. The delegation accompanying him includes senior ministers and officials, while Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister during Wong’s absence.
Timor-Leste’s decision to award PM Wong with the Order of Timor-Leste reflects the appreciation for Singapore’s ongoing support and the mutual desire to expand cooperative efforts. The visit is poised to not only fortify diplomatic connections but also to lay the groundwork for future initiatives promoting regional stability and growth.
