Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional cooperation as they gear up to chair ASEAN in successive years. Singapore is slated to take on the role in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. This commitment was solidified during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2. The meeting marked a significant occasion as it was the first encounter between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first such bilateral retreat in over a decade.

The leaders hailed the strong bilateral relations between their nations and committed to a multi-year agenda that ensures continuity across their successive ASEAN chairmanships. They outlined plans to expand collaboration in several key sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. Both nations also reiterated their support for a rules-based international order and emphasized the importance of stronger ASEAN regional integration.

Energy cooperation was a focal point of their discussions, particularly regarding the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This initiative is crucial as it enables Singapore to import renewable hydropower from Laos through Thailand and Malaysia, highlighting a commitment to sustainable energy solutions in the region.

In addition to energy, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on social sector development. This agreement aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and promote collaboration between relevant institutions. Such initiatives underscore the broad scope of their cooperative efforts.

The economic ties between Singapore and Thailand remain robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Furthermore, Singapore has consistently been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, underscoring the depth and significance of their economic partnership.
