Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, emphasized that, as small states with limited domestic markets and scarce natural resources, Singapore and Luxembourg face similar challenges. He noted that both countries have leveraged their openness and global connections to emerge as significant financial and business hubs catering to broader regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic ties between the two nations, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU bloc. The two countries are also working towards enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. Both Singapore and Luxembourg advocate for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
During an official visit from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, engaged in discussions with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their talks centered on geopolitical developments and strategies to promote stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit marks a significant milestone as Singapore and Luxembourg celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.
The establishment of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore underscores its commitment to expanding engagement with Singapore and the broader region. Prime Minister Frieden’s presence in Singapore signifies a strong dedication to this partnership. As part of his visit, Frieden is scheduled to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address Europe’s role and autonomy in an evolving global landscape.
