The framework for Ukraine’s future security is taking shape, and President Donald Trump is pushing for a model based on European leadership. He discussed this approach in a recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This diplomatic exchange followed an August 18 summit in Washington, where Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. The primary agenda was to chart a course for Ukraine’s safety and sovereignty.
Trump has publicly articulated his vision, stating that while the U.S. will offer support, it will be in a “backup” capacity. He believes the primary responsibility for providing “significant security guarantees” rests with European nations.
Adding another dimension to his foreign policy, Trump also disclosed an earlier meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. In that session, they explored the future of arms control, including potential nuclear arsenal reductions after the Ukraine crisis.
