President Donald Trump revealed Thursday that American forces had conducted strikes against ISIS targets in northwest Nigeria, targeting militants the president described as “terrorist scum” attacking Christian communities. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that ISIS had “found out” the consequences on Christmas Day.
The strikes followed Trump’s warnings issued in October and November when he characterized violence against Nigerian Christians as an “existential threat” and potential “genocide.” The president had made clear that continued attacks would provoke American military intervention, a commitment now realized through military action.
Trump detailed that the Department of War executed “numerous perfect strikes” against militants engaged in the vicious killing of primarily innocent Christians. He emphasized American military capabilities and his administration’s commitment to preventing radical Islamic terrorism from flourishing. The president praised the precision and effectiveness of the operation.
The Nigerian government confirmed the military action through its Foreign Ministry, describing it as part of ongoing security cooperation with the United States. The partnership includes intelligence sharing and strategic planning to combat militant groups. Nigerian officials stressed that terrorist violence against any religious community represents an affront to the country’s values.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth thanked Nigeria for its cooperation and suggested that additional strikes could follow. He referenced Trump’s previous clear warnings about protecting Christians. The Pentagon released video documentation showing projectiles launching from warships. While Nigerian President Bola Ahmed has cooperated with the security operation, he has also maintained that Nigeria’s constitution protects all faiths and that the country is committed to working with international partners while ensuring religious freedom for all citizens.
