We are a product-obsessed society. We want the “after” picture, the “goal weight.” But a fitness coach with 18 years of experience argues this is exactly why we fail. By focusing on the “product” (the results), we ignore the “process” (the efforts). The key to success is to shift your mindset from product-based to process-based. Here’s how.
The first step is to slow down. A “product-focused” mindset wants to get to the “product” now. This “hypersonic” pace leads to crash diets and over-exertion. A veteran coach explains this is a flawed approach. When you rush, you cut corners, you make mistakes, and you burn out. You’re so focused on the destination that you “crash the car.”
A “process-focused” mindset is patient and deliberate. You’re not in a rush. You are focused on building a sustainable process. This careful, intentional pace makes fewer errors and, by building consistency, is what allows you to progress faster in the long run. You’re building a system that lasts.
The second, and most critical, step is to focus on your efforts, not your results. This is the very definition of “process over product.” A fitness expert insists you must stop obsessing over the scale (the product) and start obsessing over your actions (the process). The process is the only thing you can truly control.
This means your energy must be invested in controllable, daily habits: your sleep, your hydration, your food choices, your scheduled movement. This is your new “product.” This leads to the third step: choose small, consistent ‘process’ goals over big, ‘product’ goals. A “product” goal is “lose 30 pounds.” A “process” goal is “walk for 10 minutes every day.” The “process” goal is manageable, sustainable, and the only path to achieving the product.
