That “cozy” impulse to curl up into a tight ball at night is a “major risk” for your spine, a chiropractor has warned. A specialist in spine alignment explained that the tight fetal position is one of two key postures that can lead to chronic pain. He stressed that while it feels comfortable, this position “rounds the spine too much,” which has several negative consequences.
The expert elaborated that this excessive rounding, held for hours, over-stretches the muscles in your back. This can lead to muscle weakness, decreased flexibility, and persistent mid-back pain. The body is not meant to be held in this C-curve for such a prolonged period.
The specialist also pointed out that this tightly curled posture has other hidden dangers. It tightens the hip flexors, which can contribute to lower back pain, especially for those who sit all day. Furthermore, it restricts the diaphragm, which limits your ability to take deep, restorative breaths while you sleep.
The other position the expert warned against was sleeping on your stomach. This posture is notorious for causing neck strain due to the forced head twist, and it also creates an unnatural arch in the lower back. The expert cautioned that both of these positions can lead to chronic pain and posture imbalances if not corrected.
The best way to sleep, according to the specialist, is to maintain the spine’s natural, neutral curve. He recommends lying on your back with a small pillow under your knees, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs. These positions distribute weight evenly, prevent strain, and allow your body to fully repair itself overnight.
