Among the many tragedies produced by the US-Israeli offensive against Iran, none has drawn more international horror than the airstrike on an Iranian girls’ school that killed more than 100 students. US military investigators now believe it is likely that American forces were responsible for the strike, though a final conclusion has not yet been reached. The incident has become a defining moment in a war that President Donald Trump continues to prosecute without pause.
The broader conflict of which that airstrike is a part has been relentless in its scale and ferocity. American B-2 stealth bombers have dropped dozens of 2,000-pound penetrating bombs on Iran’s underground missile infrastructure. A major Iranian naval vessel has been struck and potentially destroyed. Israel has issued mass evacuation orders in Lebanon, displacing over one million people and reducing large sections of Beirut to rubble. The defense secretary has promised even greater US firepower is coming.
Iran has retaliated on every front. Missiles and drones have been launched at US military bases in four Gulf states. Additional strikes have been aimed at Israeli territory. Hezbollah has continued its rocket campaign in Lebanon and wounded Israeli soldiers near the border. Iranian state television has broadcast scenes of national mourning and defiance. The leadership council has met to plan for a post-Khamenei government. No senior officials have defected.
Trump has continued to demand unconditional surrender, warned of “absolutely guaranteed death” for those who resist, and stated his desire to help select Iran’s next supreme leader. The bombing of the girls’ school has not prompted any public change in his approach. The White House has not issued a formal apology or acknowledged the full extent of civilian casualties in Iran. The defense secretary has focused his public statements on the destruction of military targets.
The international response to the school strike has been sharp. The United Nations condemned it. European governments expressed outrage. Even some American allies privately expressed alarm. But expressions of outrage have not translated into any effective pressure to change the course of the campaign. More than 1,230 Iranians have been killed in total. Trump has framed each death as a step toward the ultimate goal of regime change and unconditional surrender.
