Álvaro Uribe, Colombia’s former president and a dominant figure in national politics, has been convicted of witness tampering in a decision that redefines political accountability in the country. The ruling was delivered by the Supreme Court following years of legal wrangling.
Uribe’s troubles began when he accused Senator Iván Cepeda of linking him to paramilitary groups. Rather than support Uribe’s claim, the court uncovered evidence suggesting he had tried to manipulate testimony.
A former paramilitary fighter testified that Uribe contacted him directly to revise prior statements—an act deemed illegal by the court. This, along with corroborative materials, led to the landmark verdict.
With sentencing expected soon, the conviction sends a firm message about legal equality and the limitations of political influence in Colombia.
