President Donald Trump is previewing a successful outcome for his “big meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating from Tokyo that he thinks “it’s going to work out very well.”
The talks are scheduled for Thursday in South Korea, where the two leaders will be attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
This meeting comes at a critical juncture. A new trade flare-up has begun, with the US threatening 100% tariffs from November 1 in response to China’s export controls on rare earths.
This new round of economic hostilities, which also includes US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has ended a recent truce.
Trump maintained his optimistic stance, calling the meeting “fantastic.” He also indicated a full agenda, saying both he and President Xi “have a lot to talk about.”
