President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has said that Singapore’s progress will never be measured by economic growth alone, but by how it uplifts the vulnerable, preserves social mobility, and ensures that every citizen can live with dignity. Speaking at the opening of Parliament, he stressed that reducing inequality and enabling every individual to contribute meaningfully remain national priorities.
He emphasized that progress means valuing every profession — from trades and services to offices and boardrooms — and ensuring respect, fair wages, and opportunities across all sectors. Training and career pathways will be expanded so Singaporeans can excel in a wide range of skills beyond academics, including technical, creative, and artistic fields.
Tharman highlighted the importance of early childhood development, noting that social mobility must begin with equal opportunities from the start of life. Support for lower-income families, people with disabilities, and their caregivers will also be strengthened, with a focus on empowerment and independence.
Families will benefit from affordable housing, accessible childcare, flexible work arrangements, and a stronger ecosystem of community care. Seniors will receive more support through initiatives like Healthier SG and Age Well SG, aimed at preventive healthcare, active ageing, and independence.
Acknowledging global uncertainties and rising costs, Tharman assured Singaporeans that the government will continue to cushion financial burdens and prepare the youth for a rapidly changing future, giving them both good job prospects and a stronger voice in shaping the nation’s next chapter.
